Let’s face it – family firms were here first. Research confirms they consistently outperform non-family firms. In many developed and developing countries, their contribution to GDP exceeds 50%. In India, that number is an astonishing – yet somehow unsurprising – 79%.

Let’s accept it – family businesses have long been labeled as unprofessional. In India, they’re often referred to as ‘Lala companies’. They were once shunned at MBA campuses. But not anymore. Today, some of India’s brightest talent now sit in leadership positions and still more are choosing to build careers in these firms.

It is only recently that hard data and research have turned the spotlight back onto these businesses and their unique configurations.

What can these long-surviving, high-performing, successful enterprises teach others? What lessons can ‘professionally managed’ companies learn from them?

Anahat has invited P.M. Kumar, one of India’s most respected HR leaders and OD consultants, to lead this conversation. PM – as he is known to close colleagues and friends – now works exclusively with family-owned businesses. Having worked with both, corporates and family firms, he brings a unique, nuanced perspective on what makes family run businesses tick.

Anahat’s Re-Think Webinars are designed to build perspectives – and break them. Come with your questions. Leave with powerful leadership insights from India’s most enduring businesses.

Anahat’s ‘Re-Think’ Webinar Series are both perspective builders and perspective shifters. The ‘Re-Think’ webinars will invite speakers to talk on subjects that seem obvious but yet not quite so obvious, about things that we know and don’t quite know enough about. They are for the curious, for the seekers, for those willing to let themselves be challenged by a different perspective. They are short! 90 minutes. An hour of talk followed by a half hour of what got triggered by the talk. They are meant to be conversations of the kind Theodore Zeldin wrote about, “… one which you start with a willingness to emerge a slightly different person”
