Make Each Human Interaction Count
Dear Reader,
“People need people” was the founding premise that led William Schutz to create the FIRO (Fundamental Interpersonal Relations Orientation) framework and the FIRO assessments. This insight was offered to him by his 3-year old daughter Laurie who said to him, “People need people even when they can do things by themselves.” Schutz dug deep into that insight and discovered that people need people to satisfy the need to belong, the need to feel competent and the need to feel loved. The insights from the FIRO assessments have continued to resonate with people even 75 years after their introduction.
Today, we can adapt Laurie’s insight to remind ourselves that “People need people even if AI can do things for them.” AI technologies allow us to process terabytes of information and uncover patterns in seconds. It can mimic a range of human reactions. What it cannot replace is the need for human connection and community.
Research suggests that feelings of connection help us thrive and live longer. Conversely, lack of connection affects us negatively and a sustained deficit in connection can lead to dysfunctions and can even increase the risk of premature death (Halowell, Sapolsky). A 20-year longitudinal study of 820 individuals showed that employees who experienced greater connection in the workplace had a 240 percent lower death rate (Shirom). The single best predictor of employee engagement is WHO people are with rather than WHAT they are doing.
The time to debate for and against AI is long past. The AI revolution has succeeded. The amazing capacities unleashed by this megashift present us with a profound opportunity – to lean fully into what it means to be human. We don’t have to analyse data and make predictions with the efficiency of machines. We can instead divert our energies to understand what creates hope and despair in the human heart. We can make each human interaction count.
Warm regards, Janaki Venkat

PRACTITIONER SPOTLIGHT : SUMAN CHANDNI
Hello, I'm Suman Chandni:
I have always been curious about why people do what they do. Psychology gave direction to that childlike curiosity, and over the past two decades I have shaped it into a career as an Organizational Psychologist, currently based in Pune. At the heart of my work is a simple belief: to facilitate the process of making people make better sense of themselves- in boardrooms, across campuses, and often in the middle of career crossroads. I strive to enable both individuals and workplaces unlock what’s possible when they start thinking — and feeling — better.

Despite the countless popular articles and books about the differences between Baby Boomers, Gen X, Millenials, and Gen Z, the empirical research tells us something quite different.
