Open Masterclass : When Leaders Give Their Power Away

Leadership effectiveness is not only compromised when leaders misuse power. It can also be undermined when they give their power away.

The need to be liked, the fear of appearing incompetent or the discomfort of asserting authority can subtly affect how leaders make decisions, navigate difficult conversations, set expectations and hold others accountable. Over time, these patterns can create “power leaks”, moments when leaders step away from the influence and authority their role requires.

This masterclass explores these dynamics through the lens of FIRO® (Fundamental Interpersonal Relations Orientation). The FIRO® framework offers a powerful way to understand the interpersonal needs and patterns – the core drivers underlying how we engage with others.

Using leadership scenarios and case studies, we will explore how patterns around Involvement, Influence and Connection, the 3 interpersonal needs identified by the FIRO® framework, can affect the way leaders exercise their power.

The session is open to all and does not require any prior certification.

During this masterclass, participants will:

• Be introduced to the FIRO® instrument and the theory underlying it

• Explore how the FIRO® interpersonal needs influence behaviour and how certain patterns create leadership blind spots

• Gain practical insights on influencing with greater awareness and intentionality
